  • In a remarkable convergence of Japanese industrial heritage, Seiko has unveiled a new series of timepieces that celebrate a shared history with the automotive icon, Datsun. The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Datsun 240Z collection is a tribute to a specific, dynamic period in the late 1960s and early 1970s, an era when both Seiko and Datsun were making significant strides on the global stage, defined by a spirit of ambition and high performance. This release comprises three distinct limited-edition collaboration models and three additions to the main Prospex Speedtimer lineup, each piece infused with the spirit of motorsport and engineering excellence.

The historical context for this collaboration is deeply rooted in the year 1969. For Seiko, this was a landmark year that saw the introduction of the Speedtimer, a groundbreaking achievement as the world's first automatic chronograph that incorporated both a vertical clutch and a column wheel. These two mechanisms were not merely incremental improvements; they fundamentally enhanced the precision and reliability of measuring elapsed time, setting a new standard in chronograph technology and solidifying Seiko's reputation as a leader in horological innovation. This technical prowess was honed through years of involvement in timing international sporting events, where split-second accuracy was paramount.

Simultaneously, the automotive world was being reshaped by another 1969 debut: the Datsun 240Z. This sleek, powerful sports car quickly captured the imagination of driving enthusiasts, particularly in its native Japan and the crucial North American market. It offered a compelling combination of style, performance, and accessibility. To prove its mettle beyond the showroom floor, the 240Z was entered into the grueling world of international rally racing. It was here that the paths of Datsun and Seiko officially crossed, with Seiko supporting Datsun's motorsport endeavors in the early 1970s.

The pinnacle of this partnership came in 1971 at the legendary East-African Safari Rally, an event notorious for its punishing conditions and brutal terrain. A Datsun 240Z, bearing the race number 11 and proudly adorned with the Seiko logo, fought its way through 6,200 kilometers of unforgiving landscape to claim overall victory. This triumph was a powerful testament to the durability and performance of the car, and it cemented a shared legacy of success built on challenging conventions and pushing the limits of engineering. It is this specific, historic achievement that serves as the direct inspiration for the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer watches.

The new collaboration collection channels the aesthetic of the Datsun 240Z through carefully considered design elements. The watches feature a striking color palette dominated by black and red, directly referencing the iconic liveries and interior accents of the car. The visual connection is made explicit on the dials, where each of the three limited-edition models showcases a different version of the Datsun logo from its history. This attention to detail demonstrates a deep respect for the source material, offering a distinct identity for each timepiece within the broader collection.

Taking a closer look at the collaboration pieces, the reference SPB517 is powered by a mechanical movement and its dial features a vintage Datsun logo composed of a red circle and a blue rectangle with the brand name in white. The SRQ057, a sophisticated mechanical chronograph, displays the Datsun name in a flowing cursive script. Finally, the solar-powered chronograph, model SSC957, utilizes a bold, block-letter version of the Datsun name. This variation in logos provides a subtle journey through the brand's history for those familiar with the legendary automaker.

Further deepening the automotive connection, the Arabic numerals used on the hour markers of these limited editions are rendered in a font directly inspired by the gauges and instruments on the dashboard of the Datsun 240Z. This is a nuanced touch that forges a tangible link between the experience of reading time on the watch and checking the car's vitals during a spirited drive. The homage extends to the case backs, each receiving a unique and commemorative engraving. The SPB517 bears the Datsun brand logo as it appeared during the rally era, while the SRQ057 features an emblem based on the one found on the victorious rally car itself. The SSC957's case back is perhaps the most illustrative, adorned with an original drawing of the Datsun 240Z created specifically for this limited-edition watch.

The functionality of the watches also draws from the world of vintage motorsports. The SPB517 incorporates a countdown timer function on its bezel, a practical tool in racing for timing critical intervals like the moments before a race start or the duration of a pit stop for tire changes and refueling. This feature gives the watch a professional, purpose-built character that aligns with the Prospex name, which itself stands for "Professional Specifications."

The mechanical chronograph, SRQ057, is equipped with a tachymeter scale on its external bezel. This placement not only enhances legibility at a glance but also reinforces its sporty appearance. In a nod to its own heritage, the tachymeter scale is formatted to measure speeds from 50km/h to 60km/h, a direct tribute to the bezel format used on the original 1969 Seiko Speedtimer. This model is a showcase of Seiko's premier chronograph technology, bringing together the past and present of the brand's time-measuring expertise.

The movement at the heart of the SRQ057 is the Caliber 8R48. This automatic chronograph mechanism is celebrated for its column wheel and vertical clutch systems, which ensure crisp pusher operation and prevent the "chrono jump" of the seconds hand upon activation, delivering superior accuracy. The dial layout includes a 30-minute counter at the nine o’clock position and a 12-hour counter at six o’clock. Built for robustness and serviceability, the Caliber 8R48 also utilizes modern MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology to create a lightweight and strong escapement, further enhancing the movement's stability and precision.

The third collaboration model, the SSC957, offers a different approach to performance with its Caliber V192 solar chronograph movement. This highly efficient movement harnesses any light source to power the watch, and when fully charged, it can operate for up to six months in complete darkness, eliminating the need for regular battery changes. Its functions include a 60-minute chronograph and a 24-hour sub-dial, providing practical utility in a convenient, low-maintenance package. This model successfully marries the vintage Datsun aesthetic with contemporary, environmentally conscious watchmaking technology.

Seiko's commitment to quality and responsibility is evident in the choice of straps for the collection. The leather straps featured on the SPB517 and SRQ057 are sourced from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group (LWG), a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable and responsible practices in the leather industry. Seiko, as a member of the LWG, is actively working to increase its use of such responsibly produced leather. The straps are also thoughtfully designed for longevity and comfort; the inner sides feature a protective lining to minimize damage from perspiration and moisture, while the strap on the SPB517 is perforated, adding to its sporty, racing-inspired character.

Beyond the three Datsun 240Z limited editions, Seiko is also expanding the main Prospex Speedtimer series with three new permanent additions. These models carry forward the 1970s automotive design language but offer it in a non-limited format. Two of these are time-and-date models powered by the Caliber 6R55, offered with a choice of a silver-white dial (SPB513) or a classic black dial (SPB515). They share the same well-proportioned case as the Datsun collaboration model SPB517, with a diameter of 39.5mm and a thickness of 12.0mm.

The design of these new time-and-date models pays homage to a Speedtimer chronograph from 1972, featuring a streamlined case shape and a distinctive multi-row bracelet. This bracelet design not only contributes to the vintage aesthetic but is engineered to wrap securely and comfortably around the wrist, making the watch suitable for daily wear. These models also boast an impressive water resistance of 20 bar, making them highly versatile and durable for a wide range of activities.

The main collection also welcomes a new mechanical chronograph, the SRQ055. This watch is powered by the same high-performance Caliber 8R48 found in its limited-edition counterpart. A key visual distinction is its black bezel, which perfectly matches the black dial for a cohesive and assertive look. Like the Datsun edition, it features the tachymeter scale on the outer bezel for optimal readability and a strong sporty presence. This model comes fitted with a robust stainless steel bracelet, positioning it as the core mechanical chronograph offering within the revitalized Speedtimer line.

To appreciate the Datsun side of the collaboration fully, it is interesting to look at the origin of the name itself. The Datsun name was first used in 1932 by DAT Jidosha Seizo, which would later become Nissan Motor. The name evolved from "DAT," an acronym derived from the surnames of the company's three early investors. The founders created a smaller car, the "son" of the DAT, which they named "DATSON." However, in Japanese, the word "son" can also mean "loss." To imbue the brand with a brighter, more optimistic association, the name was quickly changed from "son" to "sun," and the enduring Datsun name was born.

The technical specifications for the new watches underscore Seiko's commitment to performance across the range. The Caliber 6R55 models (SPB513, SPB515, SPB517) operate at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offer a substantial 72-hour power reserve, meaning the watch can be set aside for a full three days and still be running. Their 39.5mm by 12.0mm stainless steel cases are protected by a super-hard coating for scratch resistance and feature a curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface.

The Caliber 8R48 chronograph models (SRQ055, SRQ057) feature larger stainless steel cases measuring 42.0mm in diameter and 14.6mm in thickness, befitting their complex mechanics. The movement beats at a higher frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour for greater precision and has a 45-hour power reserve. These watches are fitted with a dual-curved sapphire crystal and are water-resistant to 10 bar. The solar chronograph, SSC957, sits comfortably between them with a case diameter of 41.4mm and a thickness of 13.0mm, also featuring 10 bar water resistance and a curved sapphire crystal.

From a visual standpoint, the collection presents a compelling range of personalities. The SPB517, with its blackened case finish and red accents on the dial and perforated strap, has a modern, almost tactical feel blended with its vintage racing roots. The SRQ057, with its polished and brushed steel case and intricate dial featuring red chronograph hands, projects a more classic but no less sporty character. The SSC957 provides a balanced, accessible design with the practicality of its solar movement and the unique appeal of its custom-engraved case back. The non-limited models offer a cleaner, more understated take on the 70s design, perfect for those who appreciate the aesthetic without the direct automotive branding.
