For well over a decade I have been collecting various pieces from HUF. When I was much younger, I was an avid skater, so now a bit older I enjoy picking up pieces from brands like HUF, Supreme and Palace. Seeing Seiko do a collab with HUF is just mind blowing and I'm instantly a fan. The standout feature of the watch to me is the green slightly translucent dial that lets your see the day and date wheel underneath, especially the day in both selectable languages.

Seiko 5 Sports continues its trajectory of high-impact collaborations by partnering with the streetwear label HUF to produce the reference SRPM09. This model is a direct evolution of the Seiko 5 Sports Field series, though its aesthetic lineage reaches back significantly further into the brand’s catalog. Specifically, the SRPM09 draws heavy inspiration from the 1970s "Time Sonar" models, which were noted for their use of translucent dials and tinted crystals to reveal the underlying mechanical architecture. While the original Time Sonar was a product of the disco era, this HUF collaboration updates that transparency with a specific color palette tied to the San Francisco-founded brand.

The partnership with HUF, established in 2002 by the late Keith Hufnagel, brings a distinct subcultural lens to the Field series. Hufnagel’s vision was rooted in the grit and clean aesthetic of professional skateboarding, and that ethos translates here into a watch that prioritizes legibility and a utilitarian, brushed-steel finish. This is not a radical departure from the Seiko 5 Sports platform but rather a deliberate modification of the Field watch's visual language. By utilizing the 39.4mm case architecture, Seiko and HUF have created a timepiece that fits modern proportions while maintaining the rugged, tool-watch characteristics required of the "5" designation: automatic winding, day-date display, water resistance, a recessed crown, and a durable case.

    The Case and Dial

The stainless steel case measures 39.4mm in diameter with a thickness of 11.6mm and a lug-to-lug distance of 48.1mm. This compact profile is a hallmark of the Field series, offering a more versatile alternative to the larger 42.5mm SKX-style divers that often dominate the Seiko 5 lineup. The case surfaces are predominantly brushed, a finishing choice that masks scratches better than high-polish surfaces, which is appropriate for a piece inspired by skateboarding culture. The lug width is a standard 20mm, providing ample room for aftermarket strap changes, though the integrated look of the three-link bracelet remains a primary design focus. A Hardlex crystal protects the dial side, a proprietary Seiko material that sits between standard mineral glass and sapphire in terms of impact resistance.

The dial is the centerpiece of the SRPM09, featuring a semi-transparent "HUF Green" finish. This translucency allows for a direct view of the day and date wheels, a feature rarely seen outside of the historical Time Sonar or modern Skeleton models. The green tint is vibrant and serves as a brand identifier for HUF, contrasting sharply against the black outer minute track. The indices are applied and filled with LumiBrite, as are the baton-style hour and minute hands, ensuring legibility in low-light environments. At the 6 o'clock position, the "huf" logo is printed in a minimalist sans-serif font, while the standard "Seiko" and "5" logos remain at 12 o'clock. An orange seconds hand provides a high-contrast focal point, sweeping across the green translucent surface to add a functional pop of color.

    The Movement

Powering the SRPM09 is the Caliber 4R36, a workhorse automatic movement that has become a staple of the Seiko 5 Sports line since its transition from the older 7S26. The 4R36 offers two significant functional advantages over its predecessor: hacking seconds and manual winding capability. Hacking allows the user to stop the seconds hand entirely when the crown is pulled to the second position, enabling precise synchronization with a reference clock. The manual winding feature allows the user to build the 41-hour power reserve by turning the crown, which is particularly useful if the watch has been sitting idle. The movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz) and contains 24 jewels to reduce friction in the gear train.

The movement's architecture is visible through a "HUF Green" tinted exhibition case back, echoing the design language of the dial. This case back is screw-down, contributing to the watch's 10-bar (100-meter) water resistance rating. Engraved on the stainless steel perimeter of the case back are the "LIMITED EDITION" designation and the individual serial number out of the 7,000-piece production run. Additionally, the green-tinted crystal on the back features a graphic inspired by the city of San Francisco, paying homage to HUF’s origins. The movement also includes a Diashock system for impact protection and a Spron 510 mainspring, ensuring that the caliber remains robust enough for daily wear and physical activity.

    The Strap

The watch is equipped with a standard three-link stainless steel bracelet that tapers slightly from the 20mm lugs to the clasp. The links are solid, providing a weighted, substantial feel on the wrist, and are finished with a uniform vertical brushing that matches the case. This brushed finish is intentional, as it avoids the "flashiness" of polished center links, keeping the watch grounded in its field-tool aesthetic.

The clasp is a three-fold system with a push-button release and a secure lock. This double-locking mechanism is essential for a watch designed with an active lifestyle in mind, preventing accidental deployment during movement. The bracelet has a total length of 210mm, accommodating a wide range of wrist sizes, and utilizes a pin-and-collar system for link removal.
