In 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 ventured where no one had gone before, becoming the first humans to orbit the Moon. As they slipped behind the lunar sphere and out of radio contact with Earth, command module pilot Jim Lovell uttered the now-famous words, "we'll see you on the other side." On the wrist of each astronaut was an Omega Speedmaster, a tool that cemented its legacy in the annals of space exploration. Commemorating this pivotal moment, Omega has consistently looked to the mysterious lunar far side for inspiration, leading to the creation of the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon collection. The latest chapter in this story arrives with a new 2025 lineup, a significant evolution that refines the collection's core identity through advanced material science and mechanical innovation.

Twelve years after the first ceramic Speedmaster captured the attention of the watch community, this new generation represents the most substantial update to the collection. Omega has introduced seven new models spread across four distinct dial configurations, each born from a four-year development cycle focused on perfecting ceramic construction and advancing their in-house Co-Axial calibres. These timepieces are not merely aesthetic updates; they feature redesigned case architectures with slimmer profiles, enhanced material technologies, and a renewed dedication to the precision that defines the brand's Master Chronometer certification. The collection champions the pioneering spirit of the Apollo missions while pushing the technical boundaries of modern chronograph design.

The foundation of this evolution is Omega's elevated mastery of ceramic. The case, a single block of high-tech ceramic, maintains the collection's bold 44.25 mm diameter, but its proportions have been thoughtfully refined for a slimmer presence on the wrist. A new bevelled and polished finishing process has been developed, allowing for the creation of incredibly precise and sharp lines that interact with light, producing a surface with remarkable depth and brilliance. This is particularly evident in the interplay between the brushed case flanks and the polished bevels, a level of finishing that is notoriously difficult to achieve with this durable material.

Further enhancing the watches' resilience is the application of improved Liquidmetal™ technology on the bezels and crowns of certain models. This amorphous metal alloy is bonded seamlessly with the ceramic, creating tachymeter scales with markers that are exceptionally clear, durable, and resistant to scratching and fading over time. This technical focus extends to the dial construction, where an innovative two-layer ceramic approach provides a tangible sense of depth. Combined with laser-brushed finishing techniques, the dials are able to capture and manipulate light in a way that gives them a dynamic and ever-changing appearance, shifting from deep black to subtle grey depending on the viewing angle.

Leading the 2025 collection is a reworked version of the original Dark Side of the Moon, a model that pays homage to its predecessor while incorporating all the new technical advancements. The case, rendered in polished-brushed black ceramic, measures 44.25 mm in diameter with a 50.00 mm lug-to-lug distance, ensuring a commanding but wearable footprint. Its polished ceramic bezel features a tachymeter scale in brilliant Liquidmetal™, providing a high-contrast and legible frame for the dial. At 15.09 mm thick, this automatic model benefits from the refined case architecture, sitting more comfortably than previous iterations.

The dial of this reimagined classic is a study in clarity and detail. Crafted from polished black ceramic, it hosts a small-seconds subdial at the 9 o'clock position and a combined 60-minute and 12-hour chronograph recorder at 3 o'clock for intuitive reading of elapsed time. A practical date window is neatly integrated at the 6 o'clock position. The hands and bevelled indexes are crafted from 18K white gold, providing a bright counterpoint to the black dial surface. For low-light visibility, these elements are filled with a light green Super-LumiNova that emits a powerful green glow. A subtle yet effective touch is the central chronograph hand, plated in PVD white gold and finished with a distinct red tip, adding a flash of color to the otherwise monochromatic design.

Powering this model is the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9900. This self-winding movement is a powerhouse of modern horology, featuring a column-wheel mechanism for smooth chronograph actuation and the brand's signature Co-Axial escapement for long-term stability. As a Master Chronometer, it is certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) and is resistant to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. With two barrels mounted in series, it provides a robust 60-hour power reserve. The movement's finishing, featuring Geneva waves in arabesque, is visible through a sapphire crystal caseback.

For those who prefer a more understated and stealthy aesthetic, the collection introduces an all-black variant aptly nicknamed the "Black Black." This model shares the same 44.25 mm polished-brushed black ceramic case but presents a completely tonal look. The brushed ceramic bezel is laser-engraved with a tachymeter scale, which is then filled with black Grand Feu enamel, a detail that creates a subtle, gloss-on-matte effect. The result is a scale that is legible upon close inspection but blends seamlessly into the overall design from a distance.

The dial of the "Black Black" is crafted from ceramic that has been laser sand-blasted to achieve a granular, matte texture that absorbs light. The hands and applied indexes are blackened and filled with black Super-LumiNova, maintaining the monochromatic theme while still providing a faint glow in the dark. Even the movement visible through the caseback has been given a special treatment. The Calibre 9900 receives a "black edition" finish, with a matte-blackened rotor, main plate, and bridges, complemented by black varnished engravings. This dedication to a single color palette creates a powerful and cohesive design statement.

A standout piece in the new lineup offers a different mechanical experience and a noticeably slimmer profile. This model is driven by the new manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9908. By removing the automatic winding rotor, Omega has reduced the case thickness to an impressive 13.02 mm, a significant change that will be immediately felt on the wrist. The watch retains the 44.25 mm diameter but offers a sleeker, more refined wearing experience that brings it closer to the dimensions of the original Moonwatch.

Visually, this manual-winding version distinguishes itself with a full matte dial featuring transferred grey and red markings. The dial is sand-blasted ceramic, providing a non-reflective backdrop for the key functions. While the hands and indexes are blackened and filled with black Super-LumiNova like the "Black Black" model, the central chronograph hand is rendered in a vibrant red varnish. This single element provides a dramatic pop of color against the dark canvas, enhancing legibility and giving the watch a sporty, technical character. The absence of a date window further cleans up the dial, resulting in a balanced and symmetrical two-register chronograph layout.

The Calibre 9908 movement is, like its automatic counterpart, a METAS-certified Master Chronometer with a 60-hour power reserve and extreme magnetic resistance. Its "black edition" finish is visible through the sapphire caseback, allowing the owner to appreciate the intricate mechanics of the column-wheel chronograph without the obstruction of a rotor. This direct interaction with the movement, requiring the wearer to wind it, fosters a deeper connection to the timepiece and appeals to horological purists.

The final new model in the collection moves from the dark side to the grey, commemorating the Apollo 8 mission and astronaut Jim Lovell's observation that "the Moon is essentially grey." This "Grey Side of the Moon" timepiece features a 44.25 mm case crafted from grey ceramic that has undergone a plasma treatment, giving it a unique metallic sheen. Its brushed grey ceramic bezel is filled with white Super-LumiNova, allowing the entire tachymeter scale to glow in the dark. This watch is the thinnest of the new releases, measuring just 12.97 mm thick, thanks to its manual-winding movement.

The dial of this watch is its most captivating feature. It is an open-worked, skeletonized structure made from grey anodized aluminum, offering a glimpse into the specially decorated movement beneath. The main plate and bridges of the calibre have been laser-ablated to realistically represent the cratered surface of the Moon. Through the dial, the wearer can see the near side of the Moon, while the caseback reveals a view of the far side. This three-dimensional lunar landscape creates an immersive experience that directly ties the watch to its celestial inspiration. The Moonwatch-style hands and indexes are greyed and filled with white Super-LumiNova for excellent legibility.

At the heart of this timepiece is the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3869. This manual-winding movement is a highly decorated version of the legendary calibre that powered the first watches on the moon, now updated with Co-Axial and Master Chronometer technology. It operates at a frequency of 3 Hz and provides a 50-hour power reserve. The caseback is engraved with the historic quote from Jim Lovell, further cementing its connection to the Apollo 8 mission. The visual complexity of the textured movement components, including light grey coated wheels and a dark grey gold coated balance wheel, makes it a true work of mechanical art.

Omega has also introduced new strap options to complement the refined cases. The nylon fabric straps are now lined with rubber for enhanced comfort and durability, making them better suited for daily wear in various conditions. The newly designed integrated rubber straps are not only comfortable but also feature a subtle yet meaningful detail on their reverse side: a textured pattern that mimics the lunar surface. This tactile element provides a private connection for the owner to the watch's space exploration heritage. Each strap is paired with a ceramic foldover clasp that utilizes ceramised titanium for its frame-spring folders, ensuring a secure and lightweight fastening system.
