The Hourstriker Verdict
The newest release from AWAKE sees the Son Mai get a stunning teal dial. This hue is achieved by using Rhus verniciflua tree sap applied over pure silver leaf. Layers are continually added to add depth and a color gradient to the dial. The Atlantis Blue is housed in a compact 39 mm recyled 316L stainless steel case. The watch is powered by a Swiss made La Joux-Perret G101 caliber with a full 68 hours of power reserve. In all, the Atlantis Blue is up there with my favorite dials that have come out of AWAKE.

The AWAKE Son Mai Silver Leaf Atlantis Blue enters the independent watch market as a highly constrained production run of 100 pieces, focusing heavily on integrating Southeast Asian artisanal techniques with Swiss mechanical architecture. Operating out of the contemporary independent sphere, the brand utilizes this release to platform the traditional Vietnamese lacquer technique known as Son Mài. Unlike the prevalent Japanese Urushi or Swiss grand feu enamel found in similar horological applications, Son Mài requires the specific sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree. This raw material is harvested in a narrow seasonal window and processed through extensive dehydration before it can be utilized in watchmaking. The sap is then blended with natural pigments and applied over a textured metal base. The result is a dial that exhibits distinct depth, dynamic light refraction, and a surface tension that modern industrial painting methods cannot replicate.
The watch pairs this labor-intensive dial manufacturing process with a recycled stainless steel case and a third-party Swiss caliber, positioning the Atlantis Blue at the intersection of traditional material crafts and modern industrial supply chains. The utilization of these diverse manufacturing nodes highlights a growing trend among independent brands to decentralize their production. Instead of relying on a single geographic point of origin, brands are increasingly sourcing specific components from specialized regional artisans. By isolating the dial production to Vietnamese specialists and the movement to La Joux-Perret in Switzerland, AWAKE attempts to leverage the specific competencies of each region. This decentralized approach requires strict quality control tolerances to ensure components from disparate global sources mate correctly during final assembly. Ultimately, this methodology allows independent producers to offer complex métiers d'art at a price point that vertically integrated Swiss manufactures typically reserve for high-complication pieces.

The Case and Dial
The case architecture of the Atlantis Blue is machined from recycled 316L stainless steel, measuring 39mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug distance of 45.6mm. The use of recycled 316L steel presents a lower carbon footprint during the initial material sourcing phase, yet it machines identically to virgin 316L, retaining the same chromium and nickel content required for high pitting resistance and baseline tensile strength. With an overall thickness of 11.80mm including the boxed sapphire crystal, and 10.90mm without, the case profile remains relatively flat on the wrist, aided by lugs that curve downwards to minimize the gap between the strap and the wearer's arm. The external finishing consists of a high-polish smooth bezel that transitions into longitudinally brushed lug hoods, separated by a sharp, polished bevel that runs the length of the case flank. The right side of the case features a standard push-pull crown, protected by subtly integrated crown guards that slope upwards from the case side. The static pressure rating is 5 ATM (50 meters), which provides adequate ingress protection for surface moisture and daily environmental exposure, but explicitly precludes the watch from mechanical diving applications. The dimensions place the watch firmly within the current market standard for versatile daily wearers, moving away from the oversized cases of previous decades toward a more historically grounded footprint.
The dial execution relies on a hybrid construction of pure silver leaf and layered Son Mài lacquer. Before any pigment is applied, the brass dial blank is entirely covered with pure silver leaf, which is manually compressed to create an organic, uneven micro-texture across the surface. This metallic base acts as a highly reflective substrate that bounces light back through the subsequent layers of translucent material. Artisans then apply approximately a dozen discrete layers of lacquer mixed with natural blue and green pigments, polishing each layer flat before the next is added. This repetitive building and flattening process creates a vignette or fumé effect, where the dial appears bright teal at the center and transitions to near-black at the perimeter. The visual output is highly dependent on ambient lighting; direct light illuminates the metallic silver leaf base, while lower light emphasizes the dark gradient at the rehaut.
To address legibility against the complex lacquer surface, the dial utilizes a proprietary luminous application termed a "coiffe" signature. Departing from the standard industry practice of filling hollowed metallic hands and indices with luminous paste, AWAKE machines the base layer of the hands and hour markers entirely from Super-LumiNova BGW9. This luminous material, based on strontium aluminate, is then capped with a faceted, high-polish steel cover. In daylight, the hardware appears as solid, polished steel applied directly to the dial. In low-light conditions, the Super-LumiNova base emits a strong blue-green glow that outlines the steel caps in silhouette, creating a halo effect around the time-telling elements. This inverse construction maximizes the volume of luminous material present on the dial without compromising the traditional metallic appearance of the hands and applied indices under standard lighting conditions. The handset itself follows a modified dauphine shape, terminating in sharp points that reach the outer minute track, while the applied hour indices are wedge-shaped with multiple facets to catch overhead light.

The Movement
Powering the Atlantis Blue is the automatic La Joux-Perret caliber G101, visible through a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback. The G101 operates as a direct structural competitor to the ubiquitous ETA 2824-2 and Sellita SW200-1, matching their 4Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) operating frequency and center-seconds layout. However, the G101 differentiates itself through a significantly modified mainspring barrel and an optimized gear train, which collectively yield an extended power reserve of 68 hours. This mechanical advantage allows the watch to be set down for nearly three full days without the mainspring fully unwinding, addressing a common constraint of the 38-hour reserves found in standard Swiss tracteurs. The movement architecture incorporates hacking seconds, allowing the balance wheel to be stopped for precise time synchronization, and utilizes a traditional lever escapement.
The aesthetic execution of the movement features a custom tungsten oscillating weight, selected specifically for its high material density. Tungsten possesses a significantly higher atomic mass than the brass or steel typically utilized for standard rotors, which places more physical mass at the outer perimeter of the component. This increased peripheral weight maximizes the rotational inertia generated by the wearer's wrist movements, translating into highly efficient winding of the mainspring. The rotor itself is deeply customized, featuring alternating concave and convex machined surfaces finished with a combination of linear brushing, micro-beading, and high-polish chamfers. The surrounding caseback ring is similarly micro-beaded and features deep laser engraving detailing the limited edition numbering and the specific "Atlantis Blue" designation. The underlying movement bridges maintain a clean, industrial finish, with vertical brushing visible across the primary plates and polished screw heads securing the assembly.

The Strap
The watch is supplied on a custom "Peacock" blue suede calfskin strap, manufactured by Bouveret in the Franche-Comté region of France. The strap width measures 20mm between the lugs and tapers down to 16mm at the buckle. This aggressive 4mm taper reduces the physical bulk of the leather under the wrist and aligns with the sizing ratios typically found in mid-century horology. The suede top layer features tone-on-tone edge stitching and is mated to a specialized rubberized calfskin lining.
This rubberized lining serves a distinct technical purpose by acting as a hydrophobic barrier between the wearer's skin and the porous suede upper. By preventing sweat and ambient environmental moisture from penetrating the internal structure of the strap, the lining significantly mitigates the degradation, odor retention, and structural failure common to standard unlined leather straps during prolonged use. The strap is secured via a standard pin buckle, machined from the same recycled 316L stainless steel as the case and finished with matching brushed and polished surfaces.

Pricing and Availability
The AWAKE Son Mai Silver Leaf Atlantis Blue is positioned with a retail price of €2,400.00. Production is strictly capped at a limited edition run of 100 individual pieces. The low production volume is a direct result of the specific manufacturing bottlenecks inherent to the Son Mài dial creation, where the extended curing times and high rejection rates of the manual lacquer application preclude large-scale serial manufacturing.
At this price point, the watch competes directly in the upper-tier independent sector, occupying the space between entry-level mechanical offerings and established luxury conglomerates. The value proposition relies heavily on the integration of the handmade artisanal dial and the extended power reserve of the La Joux-Perret caliber, effectively trading the brand recognition of larger Swiss marques for high-touch, low-yield material execution. Distribution will be handled directly through the brand's established retail channels.
